You know how your grandma always makes the best treats? Whether she’s a cookie queen, a cupcake expert, or banana bread maven, she always seems to be able to sense when visitors will be arriving, and have delicious snacks awaiting them.
With Grandparents Day almost here (Sunday 29th October), a great way to thank your nanna and show how much you love her is to do it with cake!
Nothing says love like homemade scones, brownies, or jam tarts, and we’re sure that grandpa will happily eat them up too!
Grandparents Day has been celebrated in the US since the 1970s, in the UK since the 1990s, and in Australia since 2010.
A day to recognise the influential elders in our life for their unconditional love and support, it also recognises the efforts of full-time carers of grandchildren, and the role of senior citizens within the community.
Taking the time to say thank you, and celebrate grandparents or elderly neighbours and friends, has become widely observed in schools and through community events.
We’ve put together a list of our favourite Grandparents Day treat ideas, pick their favourite and get baking!
Brownies, slices and more
If you’re in the mood to make a brownie or slice, you’re in luck! There are thousands of recipes ranging in difficulty from baking novice to expert.
Brownies and slice recipes are easy to modify to suit your grandparent’s taste (are they chocolate fiends or do they prefer a lemony twist?), and easy to transport!
Once they have cooled, cut into squares and layer into a pretty box lined with tissue.
If they love chocolate – go with Chocolate Caramel Crumble Slice.
Healthy but delicious – try Coconut, Quinoa and Pepita Slice.
For something nostalgic – Dark Chocolate Lamingtons.
Scones and breads
If you’d prefer to bake something a little denser than a slice…
You can’t go wrong with Donna Hay’s Basic Scones.
Or give Banana, Raspberry and Coconut Bread a try.
Pies and tarts
Add ice cream or cream and berries to a pie, tart, or crumble and you’re all set!
They will love Passionfruit Tart.
For something different – Blackberry and Elderflower Pie.
Cupcakes and muffins
The perfect accompaniment to a cuppa, arrange on a pretty plate with delicate flowers!
Lemon Meringue Cupcakes will delight them!
Try not to eat them all before you deliver these Triple Choc Muffins.
Go big with a cake
If the whole family will be visiting this Grandparents Day, treat them all with a home-baked cake!
Give it that special touch by warming in the oven before serving.
A little out of the ordinary – Blood Orange and Hazelnut Cake.
Old faithful – Easy Whole Lemon Cake.
Cookies are always a good idea
If you can’t decide what to go with, or your baking skills are subpar, you can’t go wrong with fresh cookies! Try these favourites…
Time-tested Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies.
Add a twist with Raspberry and Dark Chocolate Cookies.
Now that you’ve got your baked goods and carefully arranged them in a gift box or on a pretty plate, finish off your Grandparents Day surprise with flowers and a pot of tea. See our Flower Tea suggestions.

What will you treat your grandparents to this Grandparents Day?
Happy Grandparents Day! Grandparents Day is all about appreciating and loving your grandparents for who they are. Having your children spend time with their grandparents is a real gift! And, it’s it crazy how your parents will let your kids get away with everything and they were so strict with you? Ha 😉 I know that isn’t the case with everyone.

Planning Grandparents Day Party Menu
- Just like any other meal, make sure that you have appetizers, main course, and desserts for Grandparents Day party, along with loads of drinks on the house.
- Since the weather would be pleasing at this time, you can have light cheese and fruit as wonderful refreshing appetizers in the form of cheese and fruit mini kabobs. Chocolate covered cherries, French cheese puffs, egg rolls, tomato pesto tarts, stuffed mushrooms, and crispy fried wontons are other yummy and luscious party appetizers to choose from.
- Coming to the main course, you have a plethora of food items to serve your guests. Since you would be welcoming guests who love to gorge on both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, it is best to include both types of cuisines, so that everyone can enjoy equally. For non-vegetarians, you can include grilled salmon with cilantro pesto, crunchy tortilla chicken, rack of lamb, cheesy fish cakes, and smoked pork ribs. For vegetarians, pumpkin and apple soup, stuffed peppers, vegetable and walnut loaf, eggplant and bean casserole, and broccoli pasta soufflé.
- For snacks to munch on, cinnamon sugar cookies, honey walnut cookies, roasted nuts, garlic bread, and glazed baby carrots with balsamic vinegar and honey make great choices.
- Desserts can boast of fruity tart, fruit crumble, mini cupcakes, lemon mousse, orange sorbet, and chocolate truffles.
- Have on amaretto liqueur, champagne, red wine, candy cane cooler cocktail, pink ‘n’ peachy sangria, and beer as various hard drinks for your guests to choose from.
- While beetroot margarita, bard punch, mulled blueberry punch, and mojito cocktail make good alternatives for alcoholic drinks, raspberry and kiwi fruit smoothie, fruit punch, orangatang cocktail, and virgin strawberry pina colada are drinks for people who wish to go non-alcoholic.
