Psalms of Thanksgiving

Once the hustle and bustle of preparing for Thanksgiving Day begins, it’s easy to be so focused on your to-do list that you forget what the holiday is all about. Moments of gratitude like learning about Thanksgiving Bible verses can easily take a back seat to cooking a full Thanksgiving feast. It’s a lot of work, after all. Even if you’re having a more low-key Thanksgiving, though, sometimes reflecting on Thanksgiving thankfulness can be low on the priority list. Even though it’s easy to let yourself get caught up in the excitement of the holiday (or simply the relief of having a day off of work), finding time to reflect on Thanksgiving poems and Thanksgiving quotes is important. This year, try taking a step back with one of these Thanksgiving psalms that serve as a reminder that the focus should be less on the food and more about giving thanks, whether that be to God or simply to your friends and families who have been by your side through the stress of this year.

Read one of these psalms to your dinner guests before digging into the stuffing, or frame and place them around the house as a small reminder to count your blessings and show gratitude. Even if you aren’t super religious, these psalms can simply serve as a reminder of how important it is to appreciate the people in your life.

1PSALM 34: 2-10
thanksgiving psalms

I will praise the Lord at all times;
my mouth will continually praise him.

I will boast in the Lord;
let the oppressed hear and rejoice.

Magnify the Lord with me.
Let us praise his name together.

I sought the Lord’s help and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.

Look to him and be radiant;
do not let your faces be ashamed.

This oppressed man cried out and the Lord heard;
he saved him from all his troubles.

The angel of the Lord camps around
the Lord’s loyal followers and delivers them.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.
How blessed is the one who takes shelter in him.

Fear the Lord, you chosen people of his,
for those who fear him lack nothing.

Even young lions sometimes lack food and are hungry,
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the assembly of the godly and the congregation.

The Lord’s deeds are great,

His work is majestic and glorious,
and his faithfulness endures forever.

He does amazing things that will be remembered;
the Lord is merciful and compassionate.

He gives food to his faithful followers
he always remembers his covenant.

He announced that he would do mighty deeds for his people,
giving them a land that belonged to other nations.

His acts are characterized by faithfulness and justice;
all his precepts are reliable.

They are forever firm,
and should be faithfully and properly carried out.

He delivered his people;

3PSALM 95: 1-9
thanksgiving psalms

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord.
Let us shout out praises to our Protector who delivers us.

Let us enter his presence with thanksgiving.
Let us shout out to him in celebration.

For the Lord is a great God,
a great king who is superior to all gods.

The depths of the earth are in his hand,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.

The sea is his, for he made it.
His hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us bow down and worship.
Let us kneel before the Lord, our Creator.

For he is our God;
we are the people of his pasture,
the sheep he owns.

4PSALM 92: 1-6
thanksgiving psalms

It is fitting to thank the Lord,
and to sing praises to your name, O Most High.

It is fitting to proclaim your loyal love in the morning,
and your faithfulness during the night,

to the accompaniment of a ten-stringed instrument and a lyre,
to the accompaniment of the meditative tone of the harp.

For you, O Lord, have made me happy by your work.
I will sing for joy because of what you have done.

How great are your works, O Lord!
Your plans are very intricate!

The spiritually insensitive do not recognize this;
the fool does not understand this.

6PSALM 23
thanksgiving psalms
DENISE HARRIS

“The Lord is my shepherd. I lack nothing.
He lets me rest in grassy meadows; he leads me to restful waters; he keeps me alive.
He guides me in proper paths for the sake of his good name.

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger because you are with me.
Your rod and your staff — they protect me.

You set a table for me right in front of my enemies.
You bathe my head in oil; my cup is so full it spills over!
Yes, goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the Lord’s house as long as I live.” — Psalm 23

“God! Save me by your name; defend me by your might!
God! Hear my prayer; listen to the words of my mouth!

The proud have come up against me; violent people want me dead. They pay no attention to God.

But look here: God is my helper; my Lord sustains my life.
He will bring disaster on my opponents. By your faithfulness, God, destroy them!

I will sacrifice to you freely; I will give thanks to your name, Lord, because it’s so good, and because God has delivered me from every distress. My eyes have seen my enemies’ defeat.” — Psalm 54

8PSALM 67

“Let God grant us grace and bless us; let God make his face shine on us, so that your way becomes known on earth, so that your salvation becomes known among all the nations.

Let the people thank you, God! Let all the people thank you! Let the people celebrate and shout with joy because you judge the nations fairly and guide all nations on the earth. Let the people thank you, God! Let all the people thank you!

The earth has yielded its harvest. God blesses us — our God blesses us! Let God continue to bless us; let the far ends of the earth honor him.” — Psalm 67

“Praise the Lord! You who serve the Lord—praise! Praise the Lord’s name!
Let the Lord’s name be blessed from now until forever from now!
From sunrise to sunset, let the Lord’s name be praised!
The Lord is high over all the nations; God’s glory is higher than the skies!

Who could possibly compare to the Lord our God? God rules from on high; he has to come down to even see heaven and earth!
God lifts up the poor from the dirt and raises up the needy from the garbage pile to seat them with leaders — with the leaders of his own people!
God nests the once barren woman at home — now a joyful mother with children!

Praise the Lord!” — Psalm 113

No! Israel’s protector never sleeps or rests!
The Lord is your protector; the Lord is your shade right beside you.
The sun won’t strike you during the day; neither will the moon at night.
The Lord will protect you from all evil; God will protect your very life.

13PSALM 138
thanksgiving psalms
DENISE HARRIS

“I give thanks to you with all my heart, Lord. I sing your praise before all other gods. I bow toward your holy temple and thank your name for your loyal love and faithfulness because you have made your name and word greater than everything else.
On the day I cried out, you answered me. You encouraged me with inner strength.

Let all the earth’s rulers give thanks to you, Lord, when they hear what you say.
Let them sing about the Lord’s ways because the Lord’s glory is so great!
Even though the Lord is high, he can still see the lowly, but God keeps his distance from the arrogant.

Whenever I am in deep trouble, you make me live again; you send your power against my enemies’ wrath; you save me with your strong hand.
The Lord will do all this for my sake.

Your faithful love lasts forever, Lord! Don’t let go of what your hands have made.” — Psalm 138

14PSALM 146
thanksgiving psalms
DENISE HARRIS

“Praise the Lord! Let my whole being praise the Lord! I will praise the Lord with all my life; I will sing praises to my God as long as I live.

Don’t trust leaders; don’t trust any human beings — there’s no saving help with them!
Their breath leaves them, then they go back to the ground. On that very same day, their plans die too.

The person whose help is the God of Jacob — the person whose hope rests on the Lord their God — is truly happy!
God: the maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them,
God: who is faithful forever, who gives justice to people who are oppressed, who gives bread to people who are starving!
The Lord: who frees prisoners.
The Lord: who makes the blind see.
The Lord: who straightens up those who are bent low.
The Lord: who loves the righteous.
The Lord: who protects immigrants, who helps orphans and widows, but who makes the way of the wicked twist and turn!

The Lord will rule forever! Zion, your God will rule from one generation to the next!

Praise the Lord!” — Psalm 146

15PSALM 149
thanksgiving psalms
DENISE HARRIS

“Praise the Lord!

Sing to the Lord a new song; sing God’s praise in the assembly of the faithful!
Let Israel celebrate its maker; let Zion’s children rejoice in their king!
Let them praise God’s name with dance; let them sing God’s praise with the drum and lyre!
Because the Lord is pleased with his people, God will beautify the poor with saving help.

Let the faithful celebrate with glory; let them shout for joy on their beds.
Let the high praises of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands, to get revenge against the nations and punishment on the peoples, binding their rulers in chains and their officials in iron shackles, achieving the justice written against them.
That will be an honor for all God’s faithful people.

Praise the Lord!” — Psalm 149

16PSALM 150
thanksgiving psalms
DENISE HARRIS

“Praise the Lord!

Praise God in his sanctuary! Praise God in his fortress, the sky!
Praise God in his mighty acts! Praise God as suits his incredible greatness!
Praise God with the blast of the ram’s horn! Praise God with lute and lyre!
Praise God with drum and dance! Praise God with strings and pipe!
Praise God with loud cymbals! Praise God with clashing cymbals!
Let every living thing praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord!” — Psalm 150
